Number 4 in the DCI Daley series There are a lot mixed reviews for this a lot of mixed reviews for this but I enjoyed the previous 3 so didn t the bad reviews put me off we all like different things and have our own opinions The Rat Stone Serenade is written differently from the others with a mixture of the past and present The chapters aren t set out as you d expect they switch between characters often and I found I had to concentrate to eep up with all that was going on And there is a LOT going on That isn t a bad thing but I wouldn t recommend this one before reading the first 3 as you need to have the background nowledge of the characters I really enjoyed this book it is very dark and uite depressing It s a proper page turner that had me thinking about it when I wasn t reading It s good to see Jim Brian working together again and I love the new Superintendent Hopefully things will get better for them in the next book but I don t think Mr Meyrick is one for happy endings Looking forward to getting started on book number 5 I enjoyed the first 3 books that in retrospect felt like a trilogy but had distinct stories albeit covering Glasgow gangsters international drug dealing spies and a police plot to undermine the Scottish parliamentNow we have a massive international business that holds its AGM in a small village cut off from the rest of Scotland around Hogmanay with double and triple crossing protagonistsNoI was hanging on to idea it was getting to be a bit too intricate when there were twist after twist after another twist among the increasingly farcical almost Hercule Poitot type revelations at the endand have we a second end needing explanationAlready bought the rest of the series "on bases of books 1 2 so I will have to wait and see but not "bases of books 1 2 so I will have to wait and see but not any great hasteMore Carry On crossed with a Rowan Atkinson in the final showdown than the book cover claim of Rebus meets Taggart If you enjoy action packed crime thrillers then The Rat Stone Serenade should appeal as it is a really outstanding page turner but beware that the plot is a little far fetched even for a work of ficti. OnAs with the previous books in the series this thriller is set in a very atmospheric and snowy location that creates a plot setting akin to a closed room style of story The depth of characterisation is amazingly realistic particularly that of Detective Sergeant Brian Scott and his continuing battle with alcoholism which for me makes him the standout character in this series to dateDenzil Meyrick has a wonderful writing style His ability to create atmospheric locations believable characters and action scenes make you feel as if you are right there in the midst of it all The last 50 pages or so have so many twists and turns in the plot that I was at risk of missing something important as I raced towards the story s dramatic climaxoverall therefore a thrilling story with plenty climaxOverall therefore a thrilling story with plenty action scenes and subterfuge but also containing a somewhat implausible plot However its atmospheric location humour and characterisation are outstanding and the book itself can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone story although I would recommend the novels be read in order to follow the development of the various sub plots that run across all the novels to date So I heartily recommend this novel in spite of its slightly implausible plot and suggest you take a peek inside to get a taste of this terrific thriller The 4th in the DCI Daley series starts off 100 years ago as the Shannon family attempt an eviction of The Stuart s their tenants resulting in a curse being laid at the door of The Shannon s to land on them every 50 years Has the curse come back to haunt themThere is a touch of The Wickerman about this book and that supernatural element combined with an atmospheric sense of place made this a much spooky "read than the others A high body count and ghostly goings out mean you will be asked to suspend your "than the others A high body count and ghostly goings out mean you will be asked to suspend your to enjoy this novel to the fullest but you now what it s fiction right So do yourself a favour and get that disbelief hung high and settle down and enjoy a damn good story because Denzil Meyrick excels in his storytelling skills Location is a ey element in this seri. Now we have a massive international business that holds its AGM in a small village cut off from the rest of Scotland around Hogmanay with double and triple crossing protagonists.

    No!
