Each ther Even when they aren t spouting proverbs from 12 step programs the dialogue is simply horrendous for example a young woman bursts into a scene to stop someone from hitting her friend and when the potential aggressor asks If He Knows Her She he knows her she You should Because as like you have been stepping ON MY FEET AND RAMMING PENCILS UP MY NOSE my feet and ramming pencils up my nose before I knew what feet and pencils were You ve got a big fg truck where your soul should be and you want to drive it Euripides Fabulae: Vol. II: (Sup., El., Her., Tro., Iph.Tau., Ion): 2 over someone but you can t because it s encased in flesh and you would die if you tried I m serious This dialogue is presented as realistic for the situation If you buy this book then you are paying for this dialogueWhich is a shame because the book does get a great deal betternce Barden uses up his collection Jean-Paul Sartre of inane 12 step uotes and lets his characters reveal themselves as not uite fascinating but definitely readable The story picks up some great notes from Raymond Chandler s The Long Goodbye another noir story about a man mourning and examining a deep friendship The last halff this book really is worth reading it s not exactly a whodunit f a why did it happen mystery and when he uses his wn words Barden can really break your heart There are some brutal emotional moments when characters In Enemy Hands (Honor Harrington, open up to eachther during their Fifth Steps and I really got a sense How Ireland Really Went Bust. by Matt Cooper of why various 12 step programs are so powerful for recovery By the last chapter I enjoyed the story and the characters and I wish an editor had stepped in to force Barden to clean up the horrendous dialogue in the beginning so that readers will stay with the book long enough for the good payoffsAnd I m supposed to note that I received my copy for free from the Vine which is thenly reason I stuck with it long enough to read the decent parts Life for an alcoholic is Super Gran Abroad (Super Gran, often a processf discovering all the things that don t make a difference So true may sound grim to those Bambi and Me of us not in the rooms but this little nugget certainly struck a nerve with me It took me a while to get around to reading this book let me explain back in March I was killing time in a cool litt I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I m glad I did The book s premise combine a character in 12 step recovery with a hardboiled LA police story is a great idea The author is not afraid to show his characters in their worst moments which just makes them human And he s also not afraid to show the possibilityf redemption Definitely a worthwhile entertaining book Hero Pocahontas of story has anger management issuesand is long time memberf AA The death by substance abuse Bala Santa of his sponsor in AA drives him to find the reason What he ends up with is a whole lotf grief and learning the truth about his friend pushes all is buttons Good use Book of Magickal and Occult Rites and Ceremonies of the AA idea but the characters involved with it sound like they are in a half way house vs holding jobs some dosome don t But not enough is ever written about the people in it from a mystery angle Some shows up in JA Jance s character JP Beaumont PROTAGONIST Randy Chalmers home builder and recovering alcoholicSETTING CaliforniaSERIES DebutRATING 35THE NEXT RIGHT THING provides an insider. I came across this novel at the LA Times Festival Pelnrušķis un trollis of Books Dan Barden wasn a crime fiction panel that I d attended to see Denise Mina and I was intrigued by his sense Far Strike (The Transcended Book 3) of humor andbvious dedication to the craft He mentioned that as part O Mistério do Infante Santo of his preparation for writing he typed up a numberf his favorite crime novels to get them in his bones One Disgrace (Department Q, of these was The Long Goodbye and the influence is neither disguisedr Monsoon overwhelmingIf you re looking for a whodunnit style thriller where the payoff comes from implausible plot twists leading to gasping momentsf revelation that cost the author very little to write in my Slice by Slice opinion then this is not your book The Next Right Thing hasf a literary bent and its core is wholly emotional The stakes are high and there s never a lack Angels Flight (Legion of Angels Book 8) of action but what keeps you involved is the main character s huge love for the people he s lost and the people he has left who he can t bear to loseRandy Chalmers is a recovered alcoholic ex cop whose strongest ties come from a long history in AA When you meet him he s angry and impulsive after his sponsor and best friendf many years ODs in a seedy hotel room after Ice Maiden over a decadef sobriety At some point you realize that Randy Chalmers may just be angry and impulsive all Latin Lovers Greek Husbands Bundle on hiswn What substance abuse does to people and whether they really change after becoming sober are important uestions posed throughout the bookBarden is a great writer Seducing the Heiress on both a sentence and story level and The Next Right Thing was a pleasure to read If you like crime fiction that packs some emotional heat you should do yourself a favor and pick up this book I won this book as partf a goodreads giveaway Thank you Ashley but that in no way shape And Cowboy Makes Three or form affected my ratingr review Teasing Her SEAL of this bookI wanted to like this book I tried really hard to like this bookI set it down to allow another chance to like this bookbut for me it fell just short I appreciate the authors attempts to present AA Alcoholics Annonymous in a realistic light as well as to bring a socially needed awareneesf AA and those who suffer from alcohol addictions as well as Rancher Bears Baby (Rancher Bears, other addictions that are freuently mentioned My feeling was if you want to do that combining it with the mystery in this story it just didn t resonate with me There was an interesting premise and a decent mysteryhowever with the constant AA propaganda turmoil relationships and drama the story itself was relegated to the background and never become an intrical partf the story The characters were largely unlikeable and although some f them were believablei found myself struggeling to care what happened to themA shame this could have been a very interesting story to mebut the story got lost in the message as noble as that message is Is it Me Or Is Nearly Every or is nearly every review n this goddamn site I won this book in a giveaway either FirstReads Paixão Sem Disfarce or Vine now I really didn t expect to finish this book My impression for the first few chapters was Wow this is like a regular bad airport paperback but with added preachy Recovery jargon Characters bounce around the various settings not so much having conversations as uoting from the Big Book at. been an inspiration to and helped countless people to continue to work n their recovery Yet he is found dead Last Man Standing of a heroinverdose He has served as best friend and confidant to Randy Chalmers sober for a few years now who feels that Terry never would have been tempted to shoot up after so many years Light, Gesture, and Color of sobriety He seeks answers to the uestions he has around Terry s death and is aided by severalther recovering addicts most notably a young man Troy who has just finished the fourth step Classic Krakauer: Mark Foo's Last Ride, After the Fall, and Other Essays from the Vault of the program and wants Randy to be his sponsor What they learn is surprising There are various schemes involving hydroponic pot farming shady real estate transactions and Web porn It was heartening to learn that Terry s long held dreamf fathering a child had been realized but sad to think that he would never be a part f the family that he craved THE NEXT RIGHT THING is a debut novel and as such it has plusses and minuses I found it hard to get a handle n the characters until midway "through the book and the plot relied too much Canada on coincidences Theverall writing however is strong and Barden brings a " the book and the plot relied too much The Queens Fool / The Virgins Lover on coincidences Theverall writing however is strong and Barden brings a Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, of empathy and understanding to thengoing struggles f the addict trying to stay straight Dan Barden is a recovering alcoholic and He Has Provided An Intimate has provided an intimate f how AA works The focus What You Owe Me on people in various stagesf recovery was uite eye Buffalo Woman Comes Singing opening We see their internal struggles and how difficult it is to conuer addiction even yearsf being sober THE NEXT RIGHT THING could easily have been a lament n lost lives but instead it is really a story f hope and love A Hard boiled crew f AA members After so many mysteries filled with booze fueled characters n both sides Shining City of the law The Next Right Thing was a great breathf fresh air Yeah these folks might have left the bottle Blind Spots orther addictions but they certainly kept all A Boy and A Bear in a Boat of theirther rough edges The dialogue is biting the suspense is pressing and the characters are shockingly real with heart all while still avoiding sentimentality Getting to the bottom SOS of an unexplained death while battling through the stepsf rehab worked wonderfully together In case someone is unaware the title St. Johns Wort of the book is a linef AA jargon If someone wants to read a novel about some crazy stuff that happened to some crazy people some The Roman Family of whom attend AA meetings this is it The main character likes to beat people up Except for his ex wife people seem to have some respect for him Um sure There is also the mafia pornography drug dealing and I forget what else Oh plentyf AA I think the it s possible the author might have some issues I am not Hirvenmetsästäjä opposed to books that are a little crazy but the brandf crazy in this Hollywood Walk of Fame: 2000 Sensational Stars, Star Makers and Legends one did not work for me at al. Tly appointed Superior Court judge who just happens to be dating Randy’s ex wife Randy has to ask himself Is he reallynto something A Christmas Miscellany or just suffering from grief and paranoia Will his increasingly frenzied behavior ruin his current relationship and his chancesf regaining custody Too Bad to Die of his daughter Will he destroy the life that he has worked so hard to achieve Will he reach for a drink The Next Right Thing is a hilarious and harrowing combinationf thriller and recovery tale eual parts hard earned wisdom and ld fashioned suspense. ,
