[PDF/EBOOK] (Lovers Lane) BY Rick Geary

Me succinctly than any other author I EVER READ HE HAS ve ver read He has gift for distillation and visualization that is all this could apply to any one of his books I picked up from The Borden Tragedy A Memoir of the Infamous Double Murder at Fall River Mass 1892 to The Murder of Abraham Lincoln Here I want to talk about his handling of the Hall Mills double murder that happened in the fall of 1922 This book just struck me so forcibly I can t uite understand why It s almost as if I have a weird connection to the crime It felt familiar somehow and yet I m sure I d never heard of this crime before While it lead to a media circus what I was drawn to was the personal nature of this story So many of the great unsolved crimes are serial killers who were never caught yet here it s just an adulterous couple at the center of the media firestorm Plus the way the crime was committed the removal of the organs that allowed Eleanor Mills to sing plus having her favorite song removed from very copy of very hymnal in the church I agree with the victim s daughter it sounds like a crime committed by a woman In fact that s one thing I really like about this series by Geary he shows that despite public opinion women are just as capable of committing really heinous crimes While this case was never solved and was very much muddied by an attention seeker known as the pig lady Edward Hall s wealthy wife and family were tried and found not guilty And yet the tale does have a sense of closure Because a woman had to have committed the crime and whether it was Frances Noel Stevens or another female parishioner whose advances were spurned by the priest you have a handle on the probability of who the culprit was Yes Frances could have used her money to walk away from a crime she committed she did act very oddly over the days following her husband s disappearance But unlike Jack the Ripper you can clearly see the motive if not the culprit On the night of September 14 1922 Reverend Edward Hall and Mrs Eleanor Mills were walking in a part of New Brunswick town park nicknamed Lovers Lane for its popularity as a discreet spot 4 gunshots were heard and a few days later their dead bodies were found lying side by side lovers letters from between the two scattered at their feet Hall and Mills were having an affair and as Rick Geary Loyal to His Lies exhumes this long forgotten case from the past he deftly describes the complex circumstances surrounding the double murder and the possible suspects in this unsolved crime It seems that one of the jilted partiesither Reverend Hall s wife and her brothers or Mrs Mills husband were the murderers Mrs Mills was a soprano in the choir of Reverend Hall s church and the pages of her favourite hymn were torn from very book in the church Further her body was mutilated with her tongue larynx and wind pipes removed *All The Organs Needed To Sing The *the organs needed to sing The letters written by the two also indicate the murderer knew about their affair But as Geary describes the case there s little vidence to convict the likely Reverend s wife and her mentally challenged brother of the murders as the crime scene was ransacked by tourists looking for souvenirs of the murders There were also a string of unreliable witnesses as primary sources for the prosecution Despite this not being as famous a case of 20th century murder that Geary could ve picked he takes this old cold case and rejuvenates it with a lively re telling which combines Fitness for Geeks erudite research and anye for a good story drawn in Geary s signature black and white style Geary s drawing of a bloody minded madman is particularly haunting It s both a fascinating and a terrifying case of injustice and the dark side of human motion an illustration of the path jealousy and thwarted love can lead to This is the hellish side to small town life and Lovers Lane is a superb read from a master comics artis. His perpetrated by a jealous rival Four years later the case reopens due to new vidence indicting the reverend’s wife but she is an upstanding member of the community who vehemently denies that her husband ver had an affair This is a tragic story told with beguiling relish and xpert illustration in a distinctive style fitting of the ,

It s amazing to us Modern Readers The Way The readers the way the was allowed access to the crime scene The public was also give way to many facts about a case Reminds me of the Jussie Smolett case in that way too many details were given by the police Interesting case I didn t know anything about it beyond a blurb about the trial I remember from a Time Life book of the 1920s that I read when I was in grade school Too bad there was no real vidence recovered to make any sort of solid conclusions on Did not know of this unsolved crime before so the bones of the story are interesting My gripe here is that the graphic or pictorial lement does not add anything to the story The story is re told but why To what nd Nothing seems to have been added or created rick geary is a talented graphic artist Rick Geary is a talented graphic artist a distinctive style and I njoyed learning about a particular historical Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good event in this graphic novel style format As thevent is unsolved there was no
resolution so that
so that be a disappointment for some but that didn t interfere with my own reading pleasure It wasn t the most compelling XXth Century Murder story I ve Murder at the Mansion everncountered thus 3 stars but I njoyed the slice of life tale of another place and time in an asy to read pictorial fashion I ll look for of Geary s works I Seductive Surrender enjoy the newsy feel of Mr Geary s work His drawings are clean and well rendered and the stories are sensational crimes What s not to like Beautifully illustrated account of the Hall Mills murders of 1922 It seemed like an appropriate topic for Halloween An Episcopal Anglican minister and his mistress are found shot and posed in a field near the local lover s lane area An interesting true crime taken from the 1920s in which no satisfactory answer hasver been found Not Seductive Surrender (Highland Heather Romancing a Scot, exactly anxciting case Geary has written books on much xciting murders such as those on HH Holmes and the Bender family of Labette County Kansas but he s written a good story here One I hadn t heard of before ither Taking us through all possibilities as well as all the facts the reader is presented with the case in a way as to be knowledgeable without bias and perhaps try to form their own opinion or read about the crime The art of course is simply Rick Geary need I say I agerly await the next volume due out in Dec 2013 This is Rick Geary s latest ntry in his Treasury of XXth Century Murder graphic true crime series which I just love I d always heard of this case referred to as the minister and the choir girl and in fact there s a newish adult book out with that title which I now must read Geary has here summed up the New Jersey crime nicely with his droll black and white illustrations and succinct text A married minister was having an affair with one of his married choir girls One vening they re murdered during a tryst on a deserted country lane This is another one of those cases which resulted in no conclusive proof that any one individual committed the crime and one wishes that modern forensics had been around then 1922 Teens should love this graphic novel like series it may ven spur them on to adult reading Highly recommended On September 14th 1922 shots rang out near an old abandoned farm used by the New Brunswick locals as lovers lane No one went to investigate and it wasn t until two days later that the bodies of Edward Hall an Episcopal priest and Eleanor Mills a member of the church choir were found They were staged side by side with their feet facing a crab apple tree A hat obscured Edward Hall s face so only his calling card propped against his shoe gave a hint as to who the male victim was at first While both victims were shot the female multiple times besides having her hand placed on Edward Hall s thigh her throat was also slit from The Deepest Sin ear toar it was later discovered that her tongue and surrounding organs had been removed as well Around them their love letters were. The perfect ingredients for a juicy scandal and fascinating investigation are presented in this masterful graphic novel retelling of an unsolved murder from the 1920s On the vening of September 14 1922 Reverend Edward Hall and Mrs Eleanor Mills take a stroll in the New Brunswick town park Shots are heard and two days later their bodies are. ,

Scattered an apparent judgment from the killer on this adulterous couple Edward Hall was a pillar of the community and a favorite with his lady parishioners though he nded up marrying spinster Frances Noel Stevens an older woman who happened to be an heir to the Johnson and Johnson fortune and lived with a mentally handicapped brother Yet most of the community knew of his affair with the talented chorister who herself was trapped in a loveless marriage The case soon became a media circus yet almost verything was badly handled like Edward Hall s calling card which was handed through the gathering crowd for scrutiny The crab apple tree was ven denuded of branches by souvenir hunters But the crime baffled the police who didn t ven know who should investigate the bodies being found in the next county from where the victims lived But again and again the investigation lead back to Mrs Hall Could she with the help of her wealthy family have killed her husband just as he was ready to lope with his mistress For now the case remains unsolvedIt s a wonderful thing to discover a new author and realize you have their ntire back catalog to work through I was lucky nough to stumble onto Rick Geary one dreary day at the library I wasn t feeling the best and I wasn t at my local branch but they had such a lovely display in their graphic novel section featuring several books I d been wanting to read from Alison Bechdel to the history of the Carter Family And there in between Fun Home and The Carter Alison Bechdel to the
history of the
of the Family And there in between Fun Home and The Carter Don t Forget This Song was Adventures of Blanche by Rick Geary Needless to say I actually took the whole display home with me Geary s style seemed vaguely familiar but I was soon lost to the narrative Geary had taken his grandmother s old letters as a starting off point and then lovingly mbellished them to be dramatic and of their time with murderers running rampant and famous painters walking in and out of frame I uickly finished this slender volume and went to look up Geary online Having worked for both National Lampoon and MAD during my childhood back when I devoured those tomes it s no wonder his style was familiar to me with his people that all look like they have cat whiskers for jawbone definition He was a part of my past and very soon he was to become a part of my present when I realized that he had written oodles of true crime graphic novels Nine of which I devoured last year and I can t wait to finish the remaining fewHere s the thing about me I LOVE true crime I went through a period where all I watched was police procedural shows from Homicide Life on the Street to all the iterations of Law and Order and I specially worshiped Unsolved Mysteries Because I realized I don t really like true crime that happens now I like true crime that happened then I am not joking when I say that if I had a time machine I d just go back and see who all the famous killers and kidnappers were Who was Jack the Ripper What really happened to James Ellroy s mother that turned him into the writer he is today I don t just want I NEED to know When I was in undergrad I saw a very interesting one man play about the kidnapping of the Lindbergh Baby With all the new speculation about what really happened and Lindbergh s Nazi leanings I decided that the first book I d check out in Geary s Treasury of XXth Century Murder would be The Lindbergh Child I couldn t have been happier This book this series combined two things I love true crime and art While many people might take issue with how simple his drawing style is nothing than line work there is a place for ALL kinds of graphic novels in the world and this style suits the pared down spare clean way he lays out the crime and methodically analyzes it Maps and cross sections of buildings make Geary the David Maccaulay of True Crime In ach of Geary s books I ve read he has told and shown the cri. Found lying neatly next to ach other love letters strewn around them and a scarf obscures the fact that Mrs Mills’ throat has been slit The two had been involved in an affair and the press hungrily devours the story No vidence is sufficient to lead to an indictment so the mystery intensifies with conjecture Was this a dual suicide Was
